My DJ set at the Highbury Garage last night was a massive hit. Here’s what I played, almost in the right order.

*Don Caballero – Don Caballero 3
Tarwater – VAT
*The Bill Wells Trio – Presentation Piece no.1
Hood – You’re Worth the Whole World
McClusky – To Hell with Good Intentions
*The Mountain Goats – See America right
Joy Zipper – Christmas Song
The Notwist – Your Sighs
Nina Nastasia – Ugly Face
Bobby Conn – The Golden Age
My Morning Jacket – Lowdown
Fog – Pneumonia
Silver Jews – Wild Kindness

*Excitable audience members rushed up to me to tell me they loved what I was playing during these numbers.

All in all a huge hit. Didn’t think too much of the bands playing, but I’m pretty ignorant of the post-hardcore scene. Stewart’s band, Yeast, were easily the best of the four, and I quite enjoyed watching a man I’ve only previously known as a bookseller at Borders, scream himself sore onstage.

Matthew’s Brush With Fame!

Yes, folks. I brushed a famous person yesterday. It was none other than Mike Skinner aka The Streets. I was working at the main information desk in Borders and he came up to me and asked if we had the book "How to pass time on the loo". I noticed that other people in the shop kept looking over at my customer and also that my fellow staff were clamouring to speak to him. You see, I didn’t quite recognise who he was at this point. Anyway, I finally figured out what book he was talking about and the two of us went for a walk to the right part of the shop and I talked about my life selling books and he about his job at Burger King when he was sixteen. He told me about how he worked a twelve hour shift and I said to him "you’re lucky it didn’t kill you" and he replied "what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger." With hindsight it was a little disappointing that a supposedly gifted writer would peddle out such a hackneyed cliché. He had a right old laugh at my response; "but mate, you’re underestimating the murderous powers of the King Whopper". Nice bloke.
